via ferrata adventura

A Via Ferrata (Iron Way), is a fixed protection climbing path, generally a wire rope secured to the rock every few metres, sometimes supplemented by pegs or ladders, mostly found in the Dolomites mountain range in north eastern Italy. A Via Ferrata may be horizontal, vertical or a combination and can involve ascent and descent. The location we use of Cortina d’Ampezzo is fantastic, the refuge sits 1000m above the town of Cortina with panoramic views of the mountains.

We have a highly qualified team of Via Ferrata instructors. Gavin Baxter, our mountaineering training officer, set up the UK's only Via Ferrata in the Lake District and is currently doing the second. Each day’s route/activity is logged with the refuge and the Carabinieri (Mountain Police). We have extensive knowledge of the surrounding area and permissions - having spent 6 seasons there, this allows us, for example, to get closer to the via ferrata negating a long walk in/out.

We also have:
• Italian language provision.
• safety management protocols
• guides are expedition first aid trained and carry a two way radio

Equipment
We will provide all the via ferrata equipment, you will also receive a kit list of essential items you will need to bring with you. More info: additional info

Experience
You don't need any previous mountain or climbing experience as we will grade the via ferrata to you or your group. Via Ferratas (vie ferrate!) are graded with technical difficulty from 1 to 5, and seriousness (your commitment needed) from A to C. So an easier, shorter route would be a 1A and a hard technical mountain route a 5c. If you have ever been scrambling before, you could confidently tackle a 3B and above. All our instructors use an additional rope to the harness and absorbers you will be using, both as an extra safety and to allow them to belay you down (or pull you up) if you get into any difficulties. More info: skills & stamina

Sharing the Experience
We will have daily updates on the web (particulally useful for parents), including blogs, google earth routes and photographs. Post trip, we will produce dvd/slideshow presentations for a schools and larger groups and will provide a high resolution download web gallery. more information
